Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That
As any significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
