Trump Calls for Jailing of Windy City Leader and Illinois Governor as National Guard Arrive in City

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday demanded the incarceration of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader should be jailed for failing to secure Immigration agents!" Trump posted on social media early Wednesday. "The Illinois governor as well!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic party.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of state military personnel in the Windy City area following directives from the federal administration, notwithstanding vehement protests from Illinois authorities including the governor and mayor.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump attempted to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I am staying anywhere."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now demanding arrests of elected officials resisting his authority. What remains on the road toward full-blown autocracy?"

As of midweek, National Guard units from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood army reserve center, an army base approximately 50 miles from Chicago, as the federal government advances with its aggressive urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", despite police data indicate notable reductions in many offenses, including murders.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred Illinois guard forces readying for deployment, according to reports. Authorities reportedly stated the troops would not perform police functions but would protect ICE officers and government buildings.

Soldiers wearing uniforms with Texas national guard patches were observed at the military facility in Elwood. Vehicles labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in lines. Extra barriers was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has escalated deportation operations in Chicago in recent weeks, sparking demonstrations, especially near an immigration center in Broadview.

Earlier this week, state and city filed a lawsuit targeting the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a court to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'Battle'" on Chicago and Illinois, labeling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on that day prohibiting ICE officers and related personnel from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

Pritzker has accused the president of using troops as "political props" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that Trump is trying to "rationalize and normalize the presence of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act restricts the army's involvement in enforcing domestic laws. However, the president has stated he would be prepared to invoke the emergency powers, which permits a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in regions that are failing to put down an insurrection or are defying national authority.

After beginning his second term, Trump has sent or discussed sending military units to at least 10 cities, including Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the armed forces is essential to combat crime and defend ICE officers.

Statistics indicates that most violent crime across the US has decreased in recent years. In the city, for example, homicides were reduced 31% to under three hundred through August, per police data.

A recent poll published on that day revealed that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the deployment of military forces without an external threat.
